Secondary Education College in Jersey, Channel Islands.
Cedar Green undertook a large-scale plant room refurbishment project comprising three plant rooms at the University of Jersey. One was a large, oil-fired district-heating plant room located in a basement; another was a smaller, gas-fired plant room at roof level, which was converted from gas to electric; and the third was a ground-floor gas plant room, again converted to electric.
Plant Room 1
- 1.5mW district heating plant room refurbishment
- Temporary boilers
- Temporary oil tanks
- New Hoval UltraOil boilers hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) ready
- New Calorifiers
- New Pumps
- Wholesale pipework replacement
- New Trend BMS panel
- Plant room rewire
- New oil tanks and enclosures
- New flues
- Renewable energy / decarbonisation
Two large temporary boilers and one temporary oil tank were provided to ensure continuity of heating and hot water services to educational facilities, training centres and offices for the duration of the works. Existing oil-fired boilers, water heaters, pumps and flues were craned out from the basement, and all pipework was cut back to within 300mm of the walls.
New Hoval UltraOil boilers were craned into position together with high recovery calorifiers, pumps and a new BMS panel. All pipework was replaced, with some complex positional welds required to connect to existing distribution pipework.
Existing flues were dismantled externally and replaced with new flues.
Existing oil tanks were removed and enclosures demolished, new bunded oil tanks were fabricated and craned into new compliant blockwork enclosures ready for HVO.
Plant Room 2
- 200kW gas to electric conversion
- New pumps
- Replacement pipework
- Refurbishment BMS panel
- Plant room rewire
- Renewable energy / decarbonisation
As part of the client’s continued commitment to decarbonisation, a smaller roof top plant room was converted from mains gas to electric. The new electric main was installed prior to the gas main disconnection. This project was undertaken out of heating season facilitating an easier strip-out and change over.
The small rooftop plant room presented challenges not only for pipework configurations, boiler and pump locations but also loading of materials. Working with our on-island crane operators we were able to successfully and safely remove and load all plant to roof level.
Plant Room 3
- 200kW gas to electric conversion
- New pumps
- Replacement pipework
- Refurbishment BMS panel
- Plant room rewire
- Renewable energy / decarbonisation
The consultant’s design ethos on this plant room was the client’s continued commitment to decarbonisation. Once again, this plant room was converted from mains gas to electric. The new electric main was installed prior to the gas main disconnection. This project was undertaken out of heating season facilitating a more efficient strip-out and change over.
